Working between Salem, Oregon, and Florence, Italy, Samuel Hoskins is a classically trained oil painter whose practice explores the intersection of nature, consciousness, and human potential.
From an early age, Hoskins was captivated by the alchemy of material transformation. For him, the act of mulling raw earth into oil paint and arranging brushstrokes to convey a narrative represents the ultimate realization of that fascination. Guided by Terence McKenna’s assertion that "the felt presence of immediate experience—that is all you know; everything else is an unconfirmed rumor," Hoskins approaches art as a direct, firsthand inquiry into reality.
His methodology is distinctly Dionysian rather than purely analytical, seeking understanding through the subtle, unspoken rhythms of nature. He aligns his process with the biblical narrative of Elijah on the mountain: finding that revelations from the "other" rarely arrives in thunderous pronouncements, but rather in a quiet whisper. Oil painting serves as Hoskins' catalyst for stillness, cultivating the focused receptivity required to capture these elusive nuances.
Hoskins identifies beauty both in the natural world and in technological advancement, viewing humanity’s drive to push the light of consciousness forward as a primary source of optimism. Influenced by the concept of a "strange attractor at the end of time" and that reality is fundamentally stranger than we can suppose, Hoskins finds immense creative freedom in the unknown. This worldview frees his studio practice to serve as an open ended exploration of ideas and a bridge for intellectual connection.
Inspired by humanity's return to the Moon and SpaceX exponentially dropping the cost per kilo to orbit, the sci-fi future of a spacefaring civilization is beginning to creep into the Overton window—a shift he finds delightfully strange.
